I. Definition and Structural Characteristics of 4A Zeolite
The chemical formula of 4A zeolite is Na₁₂Al₁₂Si₁₂O₄₈·27H₂O. It is a three-dimensional framework compound composed of silicon-oxygen (SiO₄) tetrahedra and aluminum-oxygen (AlO₄) tetrahedra, belonging to the cubic crystal system. At the center of its unit cell, there is a cavity with a diameter of 1.14 Å, which is connected to six similar cavities through an 8-membered ring. The free cavities formed by the 8-membered ring structure have a diameter of approximately 4.12 Å, hence the name "4A zeolite". This unique structure endows 4A zeolite with many special properties. The small pores uniformly distributed inside have a pore diameter of 0.42 nm, forming a huge specific surface area, typically about 600 m²/g. This structural feature gives it a strong adsorption capacity, enabling it to effectively adsorb water, liquids, gases, and unsaturated organic substances. Additionally, 4A zeolite is a white solid granular material, insoluble in water and organic solvents, but soluble in strong alkali and strong acid environments. When heated above 800 degree , it will recrystallize to form a white silica-like structure and has the ability to exchange calcium ions, with a theoretical exchange capacity of up to 352 mg CaCO₃/g, and in practical applications, it is generally between 290 - 320 mg CaCO₃/g.
